New Executive Director at El Centro of Henderson County

As of November 5, Sergio Fernández enthusiastically assumed the new Executive Office of El Centro of Henderson County. Of Argentine nationality and with a degree in psychology, Fernández has worked, since 2005, as a specialist in Mental Health in non-profit organizations in Miami, New York, but also in Asheville, where he has lived since 2014.

"I came to the United States in 2001 to study a specialty in Psychology and from 2005 I started working as a youth counselor and later as director of the youth program at the Miami Victims Services Center. In 2008, I moved to New York to work at Dynamic Youth Services where I continued to work on the subject of trauma and addictions. Finally, I have done my practice as an independent psychologist in Asheville. "

Father of two children, Sergio Fernandez considers himself a man focused on his family, passionate about soccer, music and his profession, but also believes that he is sensitive and committed to the reality facing the Hispanic community in the United States and now particularly in Henderson County and surrounding areas.

"Since I arrived in the United States - fortunate enough to be bilingual - I could observe the strong discrimination against our community, and particularly towards certain people and countries, and that situation always made me want to create an organization that would work and advocate on behalf of the Hispanic community. Life has put me at the forefront of that opportunity through El Centro and I am full of ideas and energy to not only make my dreams come true, but mainly to serve the community "he said.

According to the new director, El Centro will initiate a new phase that includes making improvements to the physical space, diversifying fundraising, reactivating the meeting and communicating with the community, incorporating the mental health component and strengthening advocacy and education. Likewise, it considers that it wishes to invigorate alliances with companies, organizations, churches and other local agencies in order to increase sustainability of community organizing endeavors and projects.

"Although my approach to work has been the issue of mental health, my intention is to turn El Centro into a space that responds to the diversity of needs of our people so that they have more and better tools to face daily challenges - work, migratory, family and social - to live with dignity in this country and community, "he said.

The new director, who begins to become familiar with the organization and the community, wants to make El Centro a space open to the ideas and needs of the community, so he asks that all those interested in making proposals, suggestions or wishing to work in jointly during this new leadership to write to elcentro.lac@gmail.com or call him at (828) 290 71 34 to arrange an appointment.
